Thestrongsurfacehydrationlayerofnonfou领materialsplaysakeyroleintheirresistancetononspecificproteinadsorption.Poly(ethyleneglycol)(PEG)isaneffectiveexampleofmaterialsthatcanresistnonspecificproteinadsorptionandcelladhesion.Thus,thestronginteractionbetweenwatermoleculesandPEGwasinvestigatedthrougheachT2componentinwater/PEGmixturesusingmultiexponentialinversionofT2relaxationtimemeasuredbytheCarrPurcellMeiboomGill(CPMG)sequenceoflow-fieldnuclearmagneticresonance(LF-NMR).Resultsshowthataboutonewatermoleculeistightlyboundwithoneethyleneglycol(EG)unit,andadditionalwatermoleculesover1:1ratiomainlyswellthePEGmatrixandarenottightlyboundwithPEG.Thisresultwasalsosupportedbytheendothermicbehaviorofwater/PEGmixturesmeasuredbydifferentialscanningcalorimetry(DSC).Itisbelievedthatthemethoddevelopedcouldbealsoappliedtoinvestigatevariousinteractionsbetweenmacromoleculesandothersmallmoleculeswithoutusingdeuteriumsamples,whichmightopenanovelroutetoquantitativelymeasureguesthostinteractionsinthefuture.
