AbstractThe existence of magnetic dipolar nanoparticle chains at zero field has been predicted theoretically for decades, but these structures are rarely observed experimentally. A prerequisite is a permanent magnetic moment on the particles forming the chain. Here we report on the observation of magnetic dipolar chains of spherical iron oxide nanoparticles with a diameter of 12.8 nm. The nanoparticles are embedded in an ultrathin polymer film.

2.    NameTuning the Selectivity and Activity of Electrochemical Interfaces with Defective Graphene Oxide and Reduced Graphene Oxide

AbstractEngineered solid-liquid interfaces will play an important role in the development of future energy storage and conversion (ESC) devices. In the present study, defective graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) structures were used as engineered interfaces to tune the selectivity and activity of Pt disk electrodes. GO was deposited on Pt electrodes via the Langmuir–Blodgett technique, which provided compact and uniform GO films, and these films were subsequently converted to rGO by thermal reduction. Electrochemical measurements revealed that both GO and rGO interfaces on Pt electrodes exhibit selectivity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) reaction, but they do not have an impact on the activity of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in acidic environments.

AbstractSubmicrocapsules were prepared from diethylaminoethyl dextran (DEAE-D), xanthan gum (XG) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on oil cores by ultrasonic treatment. These capsules were modified with poly-L-lysine (PLL) via electrostatic adsorption. The behavior of the capsules was investigated at an air–water interface after their introduction into an aqueous subphase. The interaction of the capsules with 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) monolayer formed on the water surface (model cellular membrane) was studied both upon their introduction under the condensed monolayer and with the use of a dilute colloidal solution of the capsules as a subphase.

AbstractComposite films of polyvinyl alcohol dispersed in ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) matrix are fabricated by using Langmuir–Blodgett technique. Pressure–area isotherms show that the composite system formed well aligned monolayer as compared to undoped FLC. Due to molecular interactions, monolayers and multilayers possess good spreading properties and we are able to transfer them onto solid substrates from air-liquid interface.

5.    NamePreparation of Non-Surface-Active Langmuir Trough Subphases from Milk

AbstractMilk polar lipid interfacial behavior continues to be analyzed using Langmuir trough experiments, but the reported Langmuir trough subphases commonly used are not fully representative of milk. A method to transform liquids of biological origin, such as milk, into appropriate Langmuir trough subphases does not currently exist, which hinders the applicability of Langmuir trough experiments to nature. Here, a procedure to manufacture milk-derived Langmuir trough subphases with insignificant amounts of surfactants from bovine milk is presented. Ultrafiltration is used to remove the bulk of protein surfactants from milk followed by the creation of solvent-induced emulsions that remove trace proteins and lipids from collected skim milk permeates.

AbstractNew paradigms are required in microelectronic when the transistor is in its downsca领 limit and integration of materials presenting functional properties not available in classical silicon is one of the promising alternatives. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to grow La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) functional materials on amorphous substrate with properties close to films grown on single crystalline substrate by use of a two-dimensional seed layer. X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction mapping demonstrate that Ca2Nb3O10 nanosheets (NS) layer induces epitaxial stabilization of LSMO films with a strong out-of-plane (001) texture, whereas the growth of LSMO films on uncoated glass substrates exhibit a non-textured polycrystalline phase.
